Large Black Slug

Scientific Name: Arion ater

Size: 6-14cm when mature

Appearance: Colour can be extremely variable; most commonly black, but can be brown or even creamy grey. The tentacles are commonly dark in colour. The foot fringe is stripped and does not contrast greatly in colour from the body sides. The sole is as dark or lighter than the body, usually with a thick lineolated border. The mucus is thick, sticky and colourless. Juveniles are commonly lighter in colour, sometimes displaying faint lateral bands.

Habitat: Virtually ubiquitous, however most commonly located in wetland areas including petlands, bogs, fenlands  and river estuaries.

Pest Status: Not considered a great pest.
